Public Safety Substation Holding Open House, Feb 6, from 6-8pm

The UVA Police Department invites the public to tour the public safety substation on The Corner, on Wednesday, Feb. 6, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The substation is located at 1413 University Ave, (next to Chase Bank). At the open house, the public can tour behind-the-scenes spaces and meet representatives from the University Police Department (UPD) and the UVA Ambassador program. Come learn about the UVA Safety and Security Department and all they do including Threat Assessment, Emergency Management, and the Office of Clery Act and Youth Protection. Starbucks, Raising Caines, and Insomnia Cookies will be served.

Established in partnership with the Charlottesville Police Department, the substation provides space for both police departments to engage with the community and conduct other work. The substation is designed to enhance the safety of the Corner area by enabling police officers assigned to that area to spend more time in the vicinity.

UVA Ambassadors are present in the substation 24 hours a day for general assistance and questions. Ambassadors are carefully screened, unarmed security officers, clad in neon yellow polo shirts, parkas and rain jackets. From 4 p.m. to 7 a.m., Ambassadors patrol a wide area that students frequent.

Although the public safety substation will be staffed 24/7 by UVA Ambassadors, the University Police remind everyone to call 9-1-1 for all emergencies and to report crimes. The UVA community should never feel that they are alone. For questions, contact University Police Department at 434-924-7166.
