Police Recruitment Process

  • Step 1 – Submit application
    • Submit your application including a cover letter, resume, and contact information for three references online at https://uva.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com/UVAjobs.
    • Please ensure all entries are true, complete, and accurate to the best of your knowledge.

  • Step 2 – Telephone Interview
    • Selected candidates will receive a phone call from the UVA Police Department’s Professional Standards Unit to complete a telephone interview.
    • During this interview, you will be provided with a brief summary of the sworn recruitment process, review of the agency’s automatic disqualifier list, and will have time to ask questions about the agency, position responsibilities, etc.
    • You should be prepared to answer questions regarding information provided or associated with the submitted employment application, cover letter, and/or resume. 
    • At the conclusion of this interview, successful candidates will be scheduled for a pre-employment testing session and will be provided with several documents for completion.
  • Step 3 – Complete PHQ
    • The acronym PHQ stands for Personal History Questionnaire.
    • You will be provided unique access credentials to access a secure, web-based platform to submit the requested information.
    • Please ensure all entries are true, complete, and accurate to the best of your knowledge.
  • Step 4 – Written Exams
    • Candidates will arrive at a pre-determined location at the University of Virginia to participate in a pre-employment testing date. This session includes a written Wonderlic Assessment (WPT), an Educational Skills Inventory (ESI) exam, and a California Psychological Inventory (CPI) Assessment.  
    • All testing materials will be provided.
  • Step 5 – Panel Interview
    • Successful candidates will be contacted by the UVA Police Department’s Professional Standards Unit to schedule a virtual panel interview.
    • This interview panel will typically consist of interviewers from the UVA Police Department, UVA Human Resources, and the UVA Department of Safety and Security.
  • Step 6 – Background Investigation
    • ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Successful candidates will undergo a comprehensive background investigation which may take several weeks to complete.
    • You will be contacted by a UVA Police background investigator who will request additional information and will conduct additional interviews with you during this investigation.
    • Please ensure you are prepared with requested and supporting documents regarding information you have provided in the employment application, cover letter, resume, PHQ, Confidential Questionnaire “CQ” and/or verbal statements made during interviews. (Such as certificates, certifications, academic transcripts, creditable and available references, etc..)
  • Step 7 – Drug Screening
    •  Successful candidates will receive a conditional offer of employment prior to any drug screening or medical exams.
    • Upon receipt of the conditional offer, candidates must schedule a drug screening with UVA WorkMed as soon as possible.
  • Step 8 – Medical Exam
    • Successful candidates will undergo a comprehensive medical exam by UVA WorkMed to meet basic law academy requirements and to ensure fitness for duty.
  • Step 9 – Psychological Assessment
    • ​​​​​​​Upon a conditional offer, a psychological assessment will be administered by a licensed clinical psychologist.
